The National Register Protects Mary See’s Pasadena House. Its Paperwork Never Mentions Her

The federal document that put the bungalow at 462 S. Marengo Ave. on the National Register of Historic Places runs to nine continuation sheets. It records the original owner, W. D. Russell; the architect, C. W. Buchanan; the contractor, Leonard Bukowski; a construction date of 1904; and the exaggerated bellcast of the roof dormer. It does not even mention the house’s most historical claim to American history: Mary See perfected her delicious chocolate recipes in the house’s kitchen. See’s Candies […]

Committee Clash Highlights Debate Over Homeless Encampment Enforcement

The Housing, Homelessness and Planning Committee meeting briefly turned contentious Monday as Mayor Victor Gordo and Councilmember Rick Cole sparred over whether Pasadena has treated homelessness with sufficient urgency. The dust up occurred as the committee considered stronger enforcement measures, possible safety zones around schools and expanded services for people living on the streets. “For 22 months, I’ve been asking to treat this as an emergency, and suddenly today it’s an emergency,” Cole said. Gordo responded that declaring an emergency […]
