POLITICS AND GLOBAL AFFAIRS

Most US lobster-trap tags that washed up on two Azores islands came from Maine, more than 3,000 km away, in a count of 1,577 pieces of North American gear with tags registered as far back as 1983

The plastic tags required on every US and Canadian lobster trap work like return addresses, and a nine-year beach collection in the Azores has used them to show where much of the gear came from and that it can last for decades, though not how much of it is out there.
