OPAL Fuels Secures Five-Year Extension At San Diego Landfill

Opal (OPAL) Fuels extended its Miramar Landfill gas rights for five years, supporting about 400,000 megawatt-hours of renewable electricity, the company said Wednesday.OPAL Fuels expects the facility to generate about 400,000 MWh of local renewable electricity during the extension, enough to power more than 6,000 US homes annually. The project captures landfill methane and converts it into local renewable power for San Diego and Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, supporting energy security and operations, said Jonathan Maurer, Co-Chief Executive Officer at Opal Fuels. The company has converted Miramar landfill gas into electricity since 1998, capturing methane that would otherwise enter the atmosphere.Since 2012, the facility has also supplied renewable electricity to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, reducing its reliance on the regional power grid.OPAL Fuels said the project strengthens the military installation's energy security and resilience while supporting its operational needs and easing demand on the broader electricity grid. The company said landfill gas projects can create environmental and economic value by turning existing public infrastructure into local renewable power sources while controlling methane emissions. The US Environmental Protection Agency ranks landfills as the third-largest source of human-related methane emissions in the US, highlighting the role of projects such as Miramar, OPAL Fuels said."For 28 years, OPAL Fuels and the City of San Diego have maintained a successful public-private partnership at Miramar, demonstrating how local infrastructure can turn landfill gas into reliable renewable electricity," said Maurer.Price: $1.89, Change: $+0.03, Percent Change: +1.89%
