GTA 6 TV or Monitor: What Is Worth Upgrading?

Keep the screen you already like. A new GTA release is a good excuse to fix a cramped desk or an unreadable living-room setup, but the upgrade needs to solve something you can name. GTA VI is scheduled for November 19, 2026, and its PlayStation listing confirms PS5 Pro Enhanced. As checked October 8, that page does not specify frame rates, rendering resolutions or HDR modes. A working screen is not worth replacing for a promised GTA 6 graphics mode that the listing never describes. ## Check the screen you own first Write down the one thing you want improved. “Better for GTA 6” is too vague to shop against. “I cannot read subtitles from the sofa” gives you a problem to solve. Use a game you know well. Check the screen from your normal seat with the usual room lighting, including the lamp you leave on in the evening or the window beside the sofa that you cannot conveniently cover. Do not build a shopping decision around a viewing position you will never use. | Problem | Check before paying | | ------------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | | Small text from the sofa | Try text-size settings and seating changes. Judge readability from your actual seat. | | Reflections | Try curtains or moving the screen. Compare candidates in the same room lighting. | | Crowded desk | Measure the stand and your viewing distance. Preserve working space. | | Missing input mode | Check the exact port and console settings. Require documented mode support. | | Want a bigger picture | Mock up its outline. Sit in your usual position before choosing. | For PS5, Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output shows the current signal and connected display capabilities. Check that before replacing anything. Sony documents this screen. If the current setup passes your checks, keep it through launch. Put the rest of the budget against an actual need in the GTA 6 console buying guide or storage guide. ## Measure the desk or sofa, then choose the size At a desk, measure from your eyes to the panel while seated normally; the desk’s depth alone leaves out the position of your chair and how far the stand brings the screen forward. Record the available width, the clearance above the desk and the space needed for your keyboard or speakers. Use the monitor size calculator for the panel’s width and height, then take the outer dimensions and stand footprint from the exact model’s manual. Mark the outline with removable tape or cardboard and sit down again. Check whether you can comfortably see the whole outline without changing your normal posture. Measure from the sofa separately. Include the seat at the end of the couch, especially if somebody else uses it while you play and needs a clear view without moving the furniture. A smaller screen that fits the room beats a larger one that forces an awkward setup. For a shared work desk, include ordinary browser text and your daily applications in the decision. The OLED TV as a PC monitor guide covers that crossover; the AORUS FO48U review provides a separate account of using a large display at a desk. ## Verify the exact model and HDMI input The input is the deciding detail. Make a short record for each candidate, including the full model suffix and screen size, and save the manufacturer’s manual beside the listing so you can check that the product being sold matches what you researched. Keep this record through delivery. Check the label on the box against it before committing to the setup. - Record the input modes the manual lists for HDMI, including the resolution and refresh rate together. - Identify which physical port supports the modes you want. - Check whether that input needs a particular setting enabled. - Confirm VRR and ALLM individually if they are on your shopping list. - Account for any soundbar, receiver or switch in the connection. Sony’s 4K/120 Hz troubleshooting calls for checking the display’s support, appropriate port, firmware and cable. It also suggests checking whether intermediate equipment affects the signal. Start with the console’s included cable and a direct connection when troubleshooting. The DisplayPort and HDMI bandwidth calculator helps compare signal requirements. It cannot replace the manufacturer’s supported-mode table or a connection test with your console. Treat 120 Hz as a feature for your broader game library. Sony’s PS5 Pro page makes its performance features game-dependent, so a display accepting a high-refresh signal does not establish that GTA 6 will render at that rate. If GTA is your only reason to pay extra, wait for its modes before choosing on refresh rate. ## OLED belongs in the whole-use decision Do not choose a panel type from GTA footage alone. Compare a candidate in the room where it will live, and include the less exciting uses: browsing, work documents and whatever stays on screen while you step away. Sony’s OLED care guidance identifies repeated or prolonged static content, including game elements and menus, as an image-retention risk. Read the care instructions for the model you are buying. Check the written warranty’s treatment of image retention or burn-in instead of assuming all panel faults receive the same coverage. OLED belongs on the shortlist for a gaming screen, but it need not be a requirement for this game. If choosing it means accepting the wrong size or stretching beyond the budget you set, compare an LCD alternative in the same room conditions. ## Test the purchase while returning it is practical Read the seller’s return terms before ordering. Check the deadline and whether opening the box changes the terms, then work out how you would get the screen back to the seller if it does not suit the room. Include any collection charges in that decision. Keep the packaging until you have made your decision. Run these checks with games you already own: 1. Connect the console directly and confirm the modes both devices support. 2. Play from your usual seat in daytime and evening light. Check text, reflections and comfort. 3. Use a familiar game that supports HDR to evaluate HDR separately. On PS5, Sony provides Adjust HDR under Video Output; On When Supported leaves non-HDR content in SDR. Sony’s HDR setup instructions. 4. Reconnect your usual audio equipment. Check sound, input switching and waking the setup from standby. Decide against the problem you wrote down at the start. If the new screen still leaves that problem unresolved, start the return before the deadline. ## Sources Checked October 8, 2026: GTA VI listing, PS5 Pro, PS5 video output, PS5 HDR setup and Sony OLED care.

Which Console Should You Buy for GTA 6?

Keep your PS5 or Xbox Series X/S. GTA 6 is scheduled for November 19, 2026 on those platforms, according to Rockstar’s official game page. A launch date is a reason to clear space in your calendar, but replacing a working supported console needs a better reason than the approaching release. Buying your first console takes more thought. Start with the library you want beyond GTA 6, then compare the complete purchase. A PS5 Pro belongs on the shortlist when premium hardware is a deliberate choice and the extra cost leaves room for the games you intend to play. ## Choose the console around your situation | Your situation | Start here | | --------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------- | | Own a PS5, PS5 Pro or Series X/S | Keep it until an actual problem justifies replacement. | | Want PlayStation games | PS5. Compare your game list, disc needs and total cost. | | Want premium PlayStation hardware | PS5 Pro, if its wider benefits justify the extra cost. | | Want Xbox disc games | A disc-equipped Series X. Verify the exact model. | | Buy Xbox games digitally | Compare Series S and digital Series X, including storage costs. | Microsoft lists both disc-equipped and all-digital Series X models, while its Series S models are all-digital. Check the full product name; “Series X” alone does not settle the disc question. Xbox console comparison. GTA 6 itself does not create a reason to buy an optical drive: Rockstar says its announced boxed version contains a download code and no disc. Choose a drive for other games you want on disc. Rockstar’s editions FAQ. ## PS5 versus PS5 Pro The regular PS5 is the natural starting point for a new PlayStation buyer focused on GTA 6. Sony lists the game for PS5 and marks it PS5 Pro Enhanced. Its page also describes DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive-trigger support. Those controller features are a concrete reason to prefer PlayStation if they appeal to you. Sony’s GTA 6 page. The Pro decision needs a higher bar. An Enhanced badge establishes support for the premium console. It does not tell you which frame rate GTA 6 will hold, how its modes compare or whether a particular difference will be obvious from your sofa. The cited game listing supplies no numerical performance target. A promised 60 fps needs evidence. Sony specifies a built-in 2TB SSD for PS5 Pro and describes enhancements that depend on the supported game. PS5 Pro specifications. Extra capacity is a tangible part of the comparison; a guessed GTA 6 benchmark is not. The test for the upgrade is simple: would you still want this console if the GTA 6 improvement were smaller than you hoped? If you want Pro for other games as well, have budgeted for those games, and would be satisfied even if GTA 6 offers a modest improvement on your particular screen, the purchase makes sense on its own terms. Otherwise, wait. An existing PS5 owner has even less reason to rush; put the replacement cost beside the games or display improvement that same money could buy. Keep that money until the upgrade solves a problem. ## Series X versus Series S Series S is included in Rockstar’s supported platform list. It deserves consideration when its complete cost fits your budget and you are comfortable buying digitally. Support alone does not establish equal image quality or performance across the Xbox models. Rockstar’s platform list. For an Xbox buyer with other games on disc, start with a disc-equipped Series X. Those discs settle the drive question. Digital buyers should compare actual offers and storage capacities. How much must stay installed? Someone planning to play GTA 6 and one other game has a different buying problem from a household where several people expect their favorites to be ready whenever they pick up a controller. List those games before adding expansion storage. Our GTA 6 storage guide separates the installation question from the decision to buy another drive. Do not buy Series S as a temporary step if you already know you want a different console. Buying twice needs a stronger justification than impatience. ## Work out the complete purchase Compare two finalists at a time using the same basket. Write their exact model names above columns A and B. Enter current checkout amounts in your currency; leave a row at zero when you do not need the item. | Cost to enter | A | B | | --------------------------- | ------- | ------- | | Console, tax and delivery | ___ | ___ | | Your GTA 6 edition | ___ | ___ | | Other games | ___ | ___ | | Needed drive or accessories | ___ | ___ | | Needed storage | ___ | ___ | | Complete purchase | ___ | ___ | Count a subscription only when you independently want its contents. Do not assign a bundle’s advertised subscription value to money you would never otherwise spend, or treat an unwanted accessory as a saving just because the box puts a separate price beside it. Leave it out. Likewise, a trade-in belongs in a separate row until you have an actual offer for your console’s condition. Complete this worksheet before choosing an edition or clicking an accessory recommendation. The cheapest console becomes less appealing if buying the other things you need would take the basket above your limit. ## Check the disc drive and screen before checkout If your other games need discs, check the drive on the exact console being ordered. Sony specifies compatibility with the CFI-2000/7000 model groups for its detachable PS5 drive and requires internet access to pair it during setup. Check the model number. An older used Digital Edition should not be bought on the assumption that any external drive will solve the problem. Sony’s drive setup guide. Check your display too. Keep a screen you already like while you decide whether anything about it bothers you. Our GTA 6 TV and monitor guide covers that purchase. Treat the two upgrades separately. Before paying, save the exact console model, the basket total and the return deadline. If the purchase only makes sense with a particular GTA 6 performance mode, wait until that mode is documented. ## Sources - Rockstar Games: GTA VI release date and platforms. - PlayStation: GTA VI listing and console features. - Xbox: Series X and Series S model comparison. - Sony: PS5 Pro features and storage. - Sony: detachable PS5 disc-drive setup. - Rockstar Support: GTA VI versions and boxed contents.

GTA 6 Storage Guide: PS5 SSDs and Xbox Expansion

Check the storage screen before shopping for a GTA 6 drive. Start there. Spend on expansion only after deciding which games need to stay installed, how often moving the others is acceptable, and whether the same crowded library will become a problem again a month after launch. Rockstar lists GTA 6 for November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Official GTA 6 page. If you still need the console itself, start with our GTA 6 console buying guide; storage is a separate decision. ## Plan for the download, leave the size blank Digital preorders can begin preloading on November 12, when the boxed version, which contains a download code, is also scheduled to become available to support preloading. Play is scheduled to begin November 19. Preloading is not playable early access. Take-Two’s preorder announcement. Buying the box therefore does not remove download planning from your checklist. Set aside time before launch to deal with the installation. There is no useful reason to turn an unconfirmed file-size claim into an SSD purchase today. Leave that field blank until your console’s store provides the requirement. ## Audit the games you intend to keep Record the free space on the storage location where you intend to install GTA 6. On PS5, Settings > Storage shows the available space, and game installations can be managed separately from saved data. Sony’s storage guide. Target the installations you no longer need; keep saved progress out of your cleanup plan. Write down the games you expect to play during launch week, including someone else’s favorites if you share the console. A game you have finished belongs on a different list from the multiplayer game your household opens every night. Start with one easy removal, check the space again, and stop clearing the library when it matches what the household uses instead of chasing an arbitrary round number. Ask before deleting somebody else’s installation. ## Choose between an archive and games ready to play | Your situation | Sensible next step | | --------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------- | | Plenty of removable installations | Clear space, then reassess when GTA 6’s requirement is available | | Games you want to keep locally but rarely launch | Consider compatible USB storage as an archive | | A PS5 library you want immediately playable | Compare compatible internal M.2 SSDs | | An Xbox Series X|S library you want immediately playable | Compare compatible Storage Expansion Cards | Sony allows PS5 games to be stored on USB extended storage, but they cannot run there. PS4 games can run directly from it. Sony’s USB guidance. On Xbox, USB can archive newer games, while a compatible expansion card provides storage from which Series X|S games can run. Microsoft’s storage explanation. An archive suits a patient library keeper. Buy playable expansion when you want to select a game and start it without first reorganizing storage. For a small active library, clearing space and keeping the money is the better choice. A shared console changes the calculation: if one person wants a long single-player session while another expects to jump back into their regular multiplayer game later that evening, keeping both installations available solves a real household problem without anyone having to justify their game to the person managing the drive. Price that convenience against the total cost of expansion. ## Build a storage budget without guessing GTA 6’s size Use the figures shown by your console. This worksheet is a planning tool; its example is hypothetical and predicts nothing about GTA 6. | Symbol | What you enter | | ------ | --------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | F | Free space on the intended installation drive | | R | Space recovered by removing or relocating games from that drive | | H | Spare room you personally choose to leave unused | | G | GTA 6’s confirmed installation requirement for your console, when available | Your installation budget is F + R − H. Once G is known, subtract it. A negative result means you need to free more space or reconsider where the game will live. For example, suppose your console shows 90GB free. Two games you are happy to remove total 110GB, and you choose a 40GB reserve. The calculation is 90 + 110 − 40 = 160GB available for a new installation. That 160GB describes this invented library. It says nothing about GTA 6’s size. The 40GB reserve is also an example choice, rather than a platform requirement or a promised update allowance. Repeat the exercise with the games you refuse to remove. Use that second pass to set a spending limit, because it ties the purchase to the library you want available throughout the year instead of letting excitement about one release decide how much storage you buy. ## PS5: buy capacity and the correct cooling assembly Sony specifies a PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe drive with 250GB–8TB capacity and effective cooling within its stated dimensions; its sequential read figure of 5,500MB/s or faster is a recommendation, rather than a mandatory minimum. M.2 SATA drives are unsupported. Follow Sony’s instructions for your console model. PS5 M.2 requirements. Compare the complete purchase. A bare SSD and a version with a suitable heatsink are different propositions. An assembly whose fit is clearly documented beats a vague listing with a more impressive headline speed. Our Samsung 990 PRO review and WD_BLACK SN850X review provide the next comparison. Already considering an older model? Read the Samsung 980 PRO review before replacing it. Check the exact capacity and cooling version you plan to order. A first-time PS5 M.2 installation requires formatting, which erases existing data on that SSD. Sony also requires each game’s data to stay on one storage location. Sony installation guidance. Avoid treating separate pockets of free space as one combined installation budget. ## Xbox: check the connector before the capacity Xbox Storage Expansion Cards use the console’s dedicated expansion port. Microsoft’s primer distinguishes these cards from USB HDDs and SSDs, which serve a different role for games requiring Series X|S storage performance. Both Series X and Series S have the expansion port. Xbox Wire storage primer. Check the listing carefully. For a larger collection of current games ready to launch, choose a compatible expansion card; for a shelf of games between playthroughs, price an archive separately and decide whether you are willing to move installations when your plans change. Reject any listing that leaves the storage type unclear. ## Make the purchase solve the right problem A single-game player should wait for the installation requirement and clear room first. A household that keeps switching games has a stronger case for expansion. Someone who already owns suitable archive storage should try reorganizing the library before ordering another drive. Keep the display budget separate too. Our GTA 6 TV and monitor guide tackles that choice. Neither purchase belongs on the list merely because the release is close. Before the preload window, revisit the console’s free-space reading and the game’s current store listing. Replace the worksheet’s blank G with the published requirement before deciding what to delete or buy. ## Sources - Rockstar’s GTA 6 page and Take-Two’s preorder announcement. - PlayStation support: storage management, M.2 SSD installation, and USB extended storage. - Microsoft’s Xbox Series X|S storage primer.

Beelink EQ14 vs GMKtec G3 Plus: Which N150 Mini PC?

For a small host with one wired connection, I would start with the G3 Plus. Buy the EQ14 for two Ethernet ports. Both use the same entry-level processor; the choice comes down to which network version you order, the drives you want to fit and what the complete machine costs. Specifications checked October 4, 2026. ## Which one should you buy? | Your requirement | Starting choice | Check before ordering | | ---------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------- | | Two physical wired connections | EQ14 | Select the intended gigabit or 2.5GbE version | | One 2.5GbE connection and a small host | G3 Plus | Confirm the listing names Intel I226-V | | Reuse an M.2 2242 SATA drive | G3 Plus | Match SATA protocol as well as the 2242 length | | Install two M.2 2280 drives | EQ14 | Confirm the exact unit’s supported drive protocols | | A workload that definitely requires 32GB | Compare a higher-capacity platform first | Resolve the system-vendor/CPU-vendor support difference before paying | | A basic desktop or small service host | Whichever complete configuration fits for less | Include RAM, SSD, network version and delivered cost | The processor does not break the tie. Both systems use the four-core, four-thread N150; Intel specifies a single memory channel and 6W processor base power. Budget electricity from whole-system power instead. That 6W processor rating excludes the rest of the computer. Intel specifications. Still choosing a processor class? Start with the broader N150 buying guide or our mini-PC shortlist. ## The configuration differences that matter | Specification | Beelink EQ14 | GMKtec NucBox G3 Plus | | --------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------- | | Processor | Intel N150 | Intel N150 | | Memory slot | DDR4 SO-DIMM | One DDR4-3200 SO-DIMM | | System vendor’s published maximum | 16GB | 32GB; Intel specifies 16GB for N150 | | Wired networking | Two gigabit RTL8111H ports or two 2.5GbE I226-V ports | One 2.5GbE I226-V port | | Storage listed by manufacturer | Two M.2 2280 PCIe 3.0 slots; supplied drive is SATA III | One M.2 2280 PCIe slot plus one M.2 2242 SATA slot | | Power arrangement | Built-in power supply | External 12V/3A adapter | Sources: Beelink EQ14 configuration/specification page, GMKtec G3 Plus specification table. ### Ethernet: decide how many physical ports you need One connection to your switch? The G3 Plus is my pick. If you want separate physical connections for an upstream network and an isolated test network, the EQ14’s second port gives you a reason to choose it instead. Get the right EQ14 version. The gigabit model uses RTL8111H controllers; the 2.5GbE model uses I226-V. The product name alone leaves that unresolved. For a router build, map the connections with the OPNsense mini-PC setup guide before ordering. ### Storage: match the drive to the slot The G3 Plus makes this choice straightforward: one 2280 PCIe slot and one 2242 SATA slot. Match both length and protocol. A spare 2242 SATA drive gives you a specific reason to choose this box. The EQ14 needs a closer look. Beelink lists PCIe-capable slots but says the supplied SSD is SATA, and Notebookcheck’s January 2025 review tested a 512GB SATA configuration. That review identifies the installed drive in its sample; it does not settle which upgrade belongs in the unit on sale today. Ask for the supported drive protocols before buying two 2280 drives for it. Notebookcheck’s tested configuration. Use the NVMe expansion checker to organize the slot and lane requirements for your planned drives. Enter the exact machine’s specifications. ### RAM: budget the guests before buying Start with the guests you intend to keep. Put their allocations and the host reserve into the Proxmox capacity planner. Our Proxmox hardware guide supplies workload starting points. If that budget already presses against 16GB, I would price a higher-capacity platform. GMKtec advertises 32GB, while Intel publishes 16GB for the N150; buying around the higher figure means getting an exact supported module and support terms from GMKtec first. There is only one RAM slot in the G3 Plus. You cannot add a second module later. For a workload comfortably inside 16GB, choose on ports and total cost. ## Published power tests and what they mean for your bill | Tested computer | Reported idle result | Source and context | | -------------------- | -------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | | Beelink EQ14, N150 | 8.91W average | Notebookcheck, January 27, 2025; one-minute external-monitor test, 16GB RAM, 512GB SATA and dual gigabit Ethernet configuration | | GMKtec G3 Plus, N150 | 9.3W at the wall | Jeff Geerling’s January 2025 test record; Ubuntu 24.04, replacement SSD; the record also describes cooling changes and a High Performance BIOS profile | These measurements belong to Notebookcheck and Jeff Geerling. Their configurations and test conditions differ, so I would use the figures to budget running costs and choose neither machine on that small idle-power difference. For budgeting, a hypothetical constant 10W system uses 87.6kWh in a 365-day year. At an example rate of $0.20/kWh, that is $17.52 per year. A constant 15W system costs $26.28 at the same rate. The calculation is watts ÷ 1,000 × 8,760 hours × your electricity rate; active work changes the annual average. Put your tariff into the Power & Cost Calculator, then compare the annual difference with the purchase difference. A tiny power saving is a poor reason to pay much more upfront. The published mini-PC power references keep each measurement with its tested configuration. ## Compare the complete basket Compare complete machines. A barebone offer still needs memory and storage; a cheaper EQ14 offer may be the other network variant. Copy the selected configurations into this worksheet before comparing totals. | Record from the selected offer | EQ14 | G3 Plus | | ------------------------------------------- | ------- | ------- | | Seller and exact configuration | Fill in | Fill in | | Installed RAM capacity and module | Fill in | Fill in | | Installed SSD model, capacity and protocol | Fill in | Fill in | | Ethernet speed and controller | Fill in | Fill in | | Required upgrades and their cost | Fill in | Fill in | | Delivered total after tax/shipping | Fill in | Fill in | | Seller’s return window and warranty contact | Fill in | Fill in | With the needed ports and capacity covered, buy the lower delivered total. Save the final configuration and planned workloads in Hardware Projects for later upgrades. ## Find the exact configuration These are model searches. WD Red Pro Review: When a Heavier NAS Drive Makes Sense

I would choose WD Red Pro for a busy NAS that needs its workload allowance or larger capacities. Its case rests on a 550TB/year workload rating, rotation-vibration sensors and a five-year limited warranty. WD positions it for continuous use in demanding NAS systems. Those are practical reasons to consider it; a lightly used home file server deserves a look at Red Plus first. WD Red Pro product information I have owned Red Pro drives for between one and two years. The exact 16TB and 24TB examples here come from published documentation, with independent test results attributed to their reviewer. ## Pick a capacity before picking the badge Check the suffix. The WD161KFGX is a useful 16TB reference point; at 24TB, distinguish WD240KFGX from WD241KFGX because WD’s current linked data sheet lists both and gives them different power figures. Every example below is a 3.5-inch SATA CMR drive running at 7,200RPM with 512MB cache. WD Red Pro data sheet | Exact model | Capacity | Rated transfer, up to | Read/write power | Idle power | OptiNAND in data sheet | | ----------- | -------- | --------------------- | ---------------- | ---------- | ---------------------- | | WD161KFGX | 16TB | 259MB/s | 6.1W | 3.6W | No | | WD240KFGX | 24TB | 287MB/s | 6.4W | 3.9W | Yes | | WD241KFGX | 24TB | 287MB/s | 6.0W | 3.6W | Yes | These are WD’s specifications. Match any independent test to its exact model. The 16TB documentation contains a conflict. Its live product page lists OptiNAND and ArmorCache among the technologies, while the capacity-specific PDF marks OptiNAND “No” for WD161KFGX, so I would purchase that model for its storage, workload and warranty characteristics without requiring those flash-related features. If they matter to your design, get the exact revision confirmed first. WD product page, WD model table Price the whole array. I would compare layouts in the NAS capacity calculator, price the drives needed for my chosen redundancy, and budget a backup destination before committing to any one capacity. Include the backup in that budget. ## What the 24TB test shows TechRadar’s October 2024 review tested WD240KFGX, recording 287MB/s read and 283MB/s write in CrystalDiskMark, plus 270MB/s read and 268MB/s write in AJA, while also describing its operating noise as intrusive for an office. TechRadar’s original WD240KFGX review It did not test WD241KFGX. Use those figures for WD240KFGX only. I would take two buying lessons from those results. First, they support treating this model as a bulk-storage drive with credible sequential performance. Second, I would plan enclosure placement before filling a desk-side NAS with it. Neither point requires pretending that one benchmark predicts every file server. Where will the NAS live? For a machine beside my chair, I would give the reviewer’s noise observation considerable weight; if the array could live elsewhere, capacity and serviceability would move higher on my list. Decide that before ordering several drives. The six-bay NAS planning guide covers the wider array decision. I would use that before ordering a full set, especially when the new disks also change how you intend to back up and restore the system. ## What 550TB/year does and does not mean An HDD workload rating includes data read as well as data written. WD’s white paper explains that this is a population-level reliability measure, distinct from SSD write endurance. Crossing a figure is not a prediction that one specific disk is about to fail. WD workload white paper That makes a workload inventory more useful than counting power-on hours alone. Include routine backups and large reads when evaluating your own server. I would choose Red Pro when that work calls for the higher rating, rather than paying for it solely because a NAS stays switched on. WD’s comparison gives Red Plus a 180TB/year rating and three-year warranty. Red Pro raises those to 550TB/year and five years. Those differences are meaningful purchasing terms, but they do not establish that your particular Pro will survive longer than your particular Plus. WD’s family comparison For a modest household library, I would start with the Red Plus review. For larger capacity requirements or a consistently busy array, Pro becomes the more natural candidate. Match the drive to the job. ## Buy the coverage you expect A five-year headline is useful only when the actual drive carries the expected coverage. WD’s support documentation distinguishes retail warranty support from OEM drives whose support belongs with the original system maker. Check the serial’s warranty status and retain proof of purchase. WD OEM and retail policy On Amazon and Newegg, compare the same model and condition, including who is selling it. I would treat a recertified offer as a separate purchase decision. A discount must be large enough to justify whatever warranty and return terms that listing actually supplies. Check the label on arrival. Match it to the order and consult the enclosure’s compatibility guidance before moving data; Synology’s compatibility list is one example of the manufacturer check to make. Run the supported diagnostics and keep the results. Test the backup before retiring the previous copy. ## Where I would spend the money Red Pro belongs on the shortlist when capacity or workload makes the purchase useful. I would compare the exact offer with the other NAS families in our hard-drive buying guide, keeping the selected model’s condition and warranty consistent. For a new array, buy enough usable space with a workable backup plan. If an existing array is doing its job, I would keep the drives and spend on a missing backup first. Buy Pro when it solves the storage problem. Where to buy the WD Red Pro: Search Amazon · Search Newegg. Affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
