Fluorine-Free, Water-Based Binder Boosts Battery Recycling

A fluorine-free, water-processable binder could simplify lithium-ion battery manufacturing and recycling. Developed at the University of California San Diego, it allows electrode coatings to separate from metal foils in water, while laboratory tests showed comparable initial battery performance and improved capacity retention.
