Two dead and dozens injured after mass shooting at Georgia party

Two people are dead and dozens more injured after a mass shooting at a Georgia block party. More than 1,000 people were gathered at a large homecoming weekend party early Sunday morning in Vienna, Georgia, a small town with a population of around 4,000. Jaquevion Jackson, 21, from Cordele, and Macaleb Jackson, 23, were identified as the two men pronounced dead at the party held on Pine Street, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigations (GBI). Another 35 people were injured in the incident and range from stable to critical, the GBI added, but it remains unclear how many were wounded in the shooting. TRENDING Stories Videos Your Say No arrest has been made as of Sunday night and the motive for the shooting was not immediately known. Those injured range in age from 14 to 51. Wounded were rushed to several medical facilities, with 26 taken to Crisp Regional Hospital in Cordele, around nine miles from the scene. Two people required emergency surgery; another two were taken to other facilities and "several patients have been admitted to the hospital for continued care", the hospital said. Dooly County Sheriff Craig Peavy told reporters it was one of the most chaotic scenes he had seen in his career. "I’ve been doing this for 42 years," he said. "I've had a lot of cases I've been on, a lot of bad situations, and I think by far this is the one that has caught me off guard." He added that people were "going every direction", with gunfire continuing even as officers responded to the scene. He said: "We don't know if it's coming at us or someone else. ### LATEST US NEWS: - Victim of vile Cornell University gang rape case targeted with 'disgusting' threats to close lawsuit - Tennessee prison chief resigns after overseeing 'botched' lethal injection of killer Christa Pike - Family of woman shot dead by ICE after driving at agents sues US Government nine months later "You just have to keep doing what you're doing and hope you don't get hit by gunfire." The party took up four blocks, the sheriff noted. The incident took place over homecoming weekend, a US tradition to celebrate a school's alumni. Sherrod Willaford, chief of the school system, said the shooting did not happen at a school-sponsored event, but noted it "may reach many of our students, families and staff". Schools will return on Monday as expected, but additional safety measures are set to be implemented. Dooly County Coroner Brett Walls said the scene was "horrific" and revealed that around a dozen injuries happened as party attendees attempted to flee. "This doesn’t, it’s not supposed to — happen in a small town like that," he said. "It's something you hear on the news in bigger cities. And even in bigger cities you don't hear that kind of a number." Mayor of Vienna, Georgia, Eddie Daniels, said the shooting happened around a block from his home, noting he saw "a lot of blue lights", but could not provide further information.
